Portable restrooms are the primary sanitation facility for the construction industry. Contractors realize that when employees have to leave the job site or walk too far to use restroom facilities, it cost money. The average time needed, including travel, to make one off-site restroom usage is seven minutes. If you divide a worker’s pay plus benefits per hour by sixty minutes, you will discover the cost for each minute of restroom usage. A University of Missouri-St. Louis study, “Provision of Sanitation Facilities at Construction Sites”, calculated that for four types of construction sites studied in the St. Louis area contractors earned an 850% return on their investment in portable restroom facilities. Availability of units was important in the study. Portable restrooms are not only less expensive than permanent facilities but their use improves productivity.

The following tables indicate how many portable restrooms facilities are necessary based on the number of employees working on your job site.

STEPS COST DOLLARS

By putting a portable restroom in the right spot, you can make an 850% return on your portable restroom investment and make your workers happier and more productive too!

Here is how an extra portable restroom can do both…

THE PROOF IS IN THE STUDY

The Center for Business and Industrial Studies, University of Missouri – St. Louis determined in an unbiased construction site study that each group of seven or more workers needs a restroom within 100 feet of the group’s central location.

Four different types of work sites (Home Construction, Utility Work Site, High Rise Construction Site and Road Construction Site) were studied to determine potential savings from just one additional sanitation facility. Two cost saving factors were measured in the study, reducing the distance workers must travel to use a facility and reducing the time workers must spend searching for an alternative sanitary or “unsanitary” facility because none had been provided. Hourly wage cost plus benefits and hourly equipment cost were both taken into consideration

CONTRACTOR BENEFITS

On the four types of construction sites studied, the net return per dollar invested in additional toilets ranged from 480% to 850%. The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) require sanitation facilities at all work sites in the United States. With OSHA pressure for a cleaner, safer, more sanitary work environment, contractors and employers must take responsibility for such improvements. More portable sanitation units result in a happier work force operating in the most productive manner. Work sites are seen by company officials, inspectors, customers and the general public. A work site with adequate worker sanitation facilities will enhance your company’s image.

The UMSL study found that more toilets are needed on job sites, and the additional restrooms pay for themselves by saving worker and equipment time. Look how just an additional 10 minutes toilet time cost you in production.
