PLANNING A
SUCCESSFUL EVENT
In planning a successful event it is essential to set aside an adequate budget for portable sanitation. A
sure way to do that is to have knowledge of industries recommendations and Federal and/or Municipal
laws governing portable sanitation at public gatherings. Once this information has been obtained an
adequate budget can be planned.
Research has proven that the portable sanitation facilities you provide will directly impact the event's
level of success. Event goers measure the quality of an event, and of portable sanitation facilities, not
only by the equipment itself, but also by a perceived level of customer service.
Because users of the portable restroom facilities determine the quality of service based on both real
and perceived conditions, you will want nice clean high quality units. Proper service will maintain the
condition of the units with regards to the level of waste, the availability of tissue and a clean interior.
Even if pumping is not required, a general housecleaning can make a significant impact on the event.
Health Department specification standards and regulations require: maximum level is to be thirty five
percent of the tank volume that a portable restroom can be used. Also at the time the restroom goes in
to service the tank must be charged with a six-inch minimum depth of deodorizer. This allows the waste
to be covered by the deodorizer. Good health standards require the sanitary waste must be kept at the
maximum distance from the seating area. This is the reason for the thirty five percent maximum use
levels.
With regards to the AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT, in 1991 the Department of Justice
issued its final ruling. It requires that "… for single unit portable restrooms at least five percent but no
less than one restroom must be disabled accessible whenever inaccessible units are provided."
St. Louis City and County Public Health and Welfare ordinances require "…at least one non-sewered
hand washing facility (be) provided for every ten or fraction of ten toilets" at public gatherings.
Research done by the University of Missouri St. Louis identified several variables that affect the
perceived level of customer service at your event. Because these identifiable conditions were also
shown to impact the image of the portable sanitation industry itself, the Portable Sanitation
Association International used the research findings to develop a criterion for levels of customer
service.
To determine the level of customer service needed to make your event successful the Portable
Sanitation Association International devised the following chart. It provides a guideline in determining
the number of portable restrooms facilities necessary to provide adequate sanitation service to your
customers.
